day in the life

Today started out funky. B started a week of nights last night, so our routine was shifted. I slept with F in my bed when I usually join him in his bed around 11 pm. Instead of waking up early and drinking coffee before the big kids got up, I caught some extra sleep (since I never sleep as well when B is gone) and they all piled into bed with me as they woke up. We took our time getting downstairs, then the kids immediately dove into their various books, even F.

M is especially focused on her Ocean encyclopedia at the moment, with lots of exclamations about various interesting facts she's learning along the way.

O, who at age 4 doesn't yet read, still doggedly refuses for me to read to him, insisting he read everything himself. :)

B arrived home, and I fed the kids before slipping away to read a chapter of Their Eyes Were Watching God in the bath before B headed to sleep for the day.

Then, table work: Miquon Math, which is working SO WELL for M. She's really happy with it, and it could be argued that the Orange level is "too easy" or isn't quite 1st grade level. But I'm in no hurry to rush her along, as she still sometimes struggles with math fact families. I'd rather she form a solid number sense and move from there.

Learning Language Arts Through Literature. She's not a fan! But I am. I think the lessons are thoughtful and easy for me to present to her, I like that they include interesting and funny literature, and the activities are something she enjoys. (Whether she'll admit it or not!) Today she made a timeline of her life and a map of our yard. And we acted out one of the stories we read, which is always a kick for her. :)

O is solidly forming his own number sense, meanwhile. Today, while examining his two hands. "If I start counting on my fingers from 0 to 9, I don't have room to make 10. But when I start at 1, I do!"

I'm catching a bit of a break, planning an upcoming trip to Croatia, and writing this.

Next: lunch, history work (we're making our own Code of Laws just like Hammurabi!), naps, and violin practice.

I worry a lot about whether we're doing enough, but my kids are smart and interesting and they are interested in learning more all the time, so I think we've got that going for us and in the meantime, living life together is its very own lesson.
